February 2021 Tbr

My February 2021 tbr is going to look familiar if you’ve seen my TBR Chapter Challenge post. I want to work on getting my physical tbr down, so that’s what I’m planning this month. Here’s what I’m reading.

Kingdom of the Wicked

Synopsis:

Two sisters. One brutal murder.A quest for vengeance that will unleash Hell itself…And an intoxicating romance.Emilia and her twin sister Vittoria are streghe – witches who live secretly among humans. One night, Vittoria misses dinner service at the family’s renowned Sicilian restaurant. Emilia soon finds the body of her beloved twin…desecrated beyond belief. Devastated, Emilia sets out to find her sister’s killer and to seek vengeance at any cost.

Then Emilia meets Wrath, one of the Wicked-princes of Hell she has been warned against in tales since she was a child. Wrath claims to be on Emilia’s side, tasked by his master with solving the series of women’s murders on the island. But when it comes to the Wicked, nothing is as it seems…

I think this is going to be a great spooky, witchy read. I loved the first chapter. The imagery is great. I can’t wait to get into it!

Outlawed

Synopsis:

In the year of our Lord 1894, I became an outlaw.

The day of her wedding, 17 year old Ada’s life looks good; she loves her husband, and she loves working as an apprentice to her mother, a respected midwife. But after a year of marriage and no pregnancy, in a town where barren women are routinely hanged as witches, her survival depends on leaving behind everything she knows.

She joins up with the notorious Hole in the Wall Gang, a band of outlaws led by a preacher-turned-robber known to all as the Kid. Charismatic, grandiose, and mercurial, the Kid is determined to create a safe haven for outcast women. But to make this dream a reality, the Gang hatches a treacherous plan that may get them all killed. And Ada must decide whether she’s willing to risk her life for the possibility of a new kind of future for them all.

I want to love this one. The synopsis sounds so interesting. I love a good western.

The Devil All the Time

Synopsis:

The Devil All the Time follows a cast of compelling and bizarre characters. There’s Willard Russell, tormented veteran of the carnage in the South Pacific, who can’t save his beautiful wife, Charlotte, from an agonizing death by cancer no matter how much sacrifi-cial blood he pours on his “prayer log.”

There’s Carl and Sandy Henderson, a husband-and-wife team of serial kill-ers, who troll America’s highways searching for suitable models to photograph and exterminate. Then there’s the spider-handling preacher Roy and his crippled virtuoso-guitar-playing sidekick, Theodore, running from the law. And caught in the middle of all this is Arvin Eugene Russell, Willard and Charlotte’s orphaned son, who grows up to be a good but also violent man in his own right.

I’ve seen great things about this book. I had to give it a try. Hopefully, I can fit it in this month.

Conjure Women

Conjure Women|Afia Atakora

Synopsis:

Conjure Women is a sweeping story that brings the world of the South before and after the Civil War vividly to life. Spanning eras and generations, it tells of the lives of three unforgettable women: Miss May Belle, a wise healing woman; her precocious and observant daughter Rue, who is reluctant to follow in her mother’s footsteps as a midwife; and their master’s daughter Varina. The secrets and bonds among these women and their community come to a head at the beginning of a war and at the birth of an accursed child, who sets the townspeople alight with fear and a spreading superstition that threatens their newly won, tenuous freedom.

Magnificently written, brilliantly researched, richly imagined, Conjure Women moves back and forth in time to tell the haunting story of Rue, Varina, and May Belle, their passions and friendships, and the lengths they will go to save themselves and those they love.

I have wanted to read this from the moment it was released, but for some reason I never picked it up. The Uncorked Reading Challenge prompt for this month is “read a book by a modern black author.” This just happened to fit that challenge. I hope I love it as much as I think I will. Plus, look how gorgeous the cover is!
