December 2020 TBR

It’s time for my December 2020 TBR. I’m feeling extra festive because it actually snowed last night! I live in Alabama and it hardly ever snows, especially not this early. So I’m ready for all the snowy winter reads. Let’s jump in.

The Great Alone

The Great Alone|Kristin Hannah

Synopsis:

Alaska, 1974. Ernt Allbright came home from the Vietnam War a changed and volatile man. When he loses yet another job, he makes the impulsive decision to move his wife and daughter north where they will live off the grid in America’s last true frontier.

Cora will do anything for the man she loves, even if means following him into the unknown. Thirteen-year-old Leni, caught in the riptide of her parents’ passionate, stormy relationship, has little choice but to go along, daring to hope this new land promises her family a better future.

In a wild, remote corner of Alaska, the Allbrights find a fiercely independent community of strong men and even stronger women. The long, sunlit days and the generosity of the locals make up for the newcomers’ lack of preparation and dwindling resources.

But as winter approaches and darkness descends, Ernt’s fragile mental state deteriorates. Soon the perils outside pale in comparison to threats from within. In their small cabin, covered in snow, blanketed in eighteen hours of night, Leni and her mother learn the terrible truth: they are on their own.

This isn’t exactly a cozy winter read, but it’s set in Alaska. I thought winter would be the perfect time to start this. I’ve heard great things about it, so I’m hoping it will clear up this reading slump.

Season of the Storm

Seasons of the Storm|Elle Cosimano December 2020 TBR

Synopsis:

One cold, crisp night, Jack Sommers was faced with a choice—live forever according to the ancient, magical rules of Gaia, or die.

Jack chose to live, and in exchange, he became a Winter—an immortal physical embodiment of the season on Earth. Every year, he must hunt the Season who comes before him. Summer kills Spring. Autumn kills Summer. Winter kills Autumn. And Spring kills Winter.

Jack and Fleur, a Winter and a Spring, fall for each other against all odds. To be together, they’ll have to escape the cycle that’s been forcing them apart. But their creator won’t let them go without a fight.

I received a copy of this in a Bookish Box. I started it then, but held off. It’s finally time to pick it back up.

The Wife Upstairs

The Wife Upstairs|Rachel Hawkins December 2020 TBR

Synopsis:

Meet Jane. Newly arrived to Birmingham, Alabama, Jane is a broke dog-walker in Thornfield Estates–a gated community full of McMansions, shiny SUVs, and bored housewives. The kind of place where no one will notice if Jane lifts the discarded tchotchkes and jewelry off the side tables of her well-heeled clients. Where no one will think to ask if Jane is her real name.

But her luck changes when she meets Eddie Rochester. Recently widowed, Eddie is Thornfield Estates’ most mysterious resident. His wife, Bea, drowned in a boating accident with her best friend, their bodies lost to the deep. Jane can’t help but see an opportunity in Eddie–not only is he rich, brooding, and handsome, he could also offer her the kind of protection she’s always yearned for.

Yet as Jane and Eddie fall for each other, Jane is increasingly haunted by the legend of Bea, an ambitious beauty with a rags-to-riches origin story, who launched a wildly successful southern lifestyle brand. How can she, plain Jane, ever measure up? And can she win Eddie’s heart before her past–or his–catches up to her?

I’m the most excited about this one. It’s a Jane Eyre retelling set in Birmingham, Alabama. How could I not be excited? I’m definitely making time for it this month.

Pre-order

Obviously, I don’t have a lot planned this month. It’s partly because I’m in a slump, but also because I’m extremely busy this month. I hope to squeeze in more than three books, but I don’t want to plan more than I can handle. So that’s my December 2020 TBR.
