Wrapping up the Modern Mrs. Darcy Challenge

One of my goals for the year was to complete the Modern Mrs. Darcy Challenge (check it out here). Since I’m a mood reader, I decided to do a prompt every month. I completed my last prompt in October. I wanted to show you guys what I read for this challenge. Check it out!

Read a book published the decade you were born.

I was born in the 90’s and I couldn’t think of a more iconic 90’s series than the Fear Street series. I devoured these when I was younger. It was fun to revisit the work of R.L. Stine.

Read a debut novel.

There There|Tommy Orange

There, There had been on my tbr anyhow. It just happened to fit this prompt. Unfortunately, I didn’t love this one, but I am glad that I read it.

Read a book recommended by a source you trust.

The Shadow of the Wind|Carlos Ruiz Zafon

For this prompt I asked my childhood friend, Karter, to recommend a book. He didn’t even hesitate to recommend The Shadow of the Wind. I listened to this on audiobook and it was such an immersive experience. He has good taste.

Read a book by a local author.

The Whole Town's Talking|Fannie Flagg

Fannie Flagg is from Birmingham, which is semi-local. I live about two hours from there, so I might have bent the rules just a little. Anyhow, I’ve always wanted to read one of her books. Unfortunately, I don’t think The Whole Town’s Talking was the best place to start. I really didn’t like it.

Read a book outside your (genre) comfort zone.

Button to Purchase Poetry for Lovers and Haters

I love poetry, but I don’t read a lot of poetry collections. Poetry for Lovers and Haters was a great place to start. It was a short, snappy read.

Read a book in translation.

I didn’t realize The Librarian of Auschwitz was originally written in Spanish until I started researching for this prompt. Luckily, I had it on my shelf so I didn’t have to do much work for this prompt.

Read a book nominated for an award in 2020.

The Stranger Diaries was a finalist in the Edgar Awards in 2020. It definitely deserved it. This books was awesome!

Read a re-read.

I hate young me for losing the dust jacket to my copy of The Magnolia League. Anyhow, this was a favorite of mine in high school and I decided to re-read it to see if I still loved it. Which I did. It’s not for everyone though. It’s very YA, but it just brought back great memories.

Read a classic you didn’t read in school.

I chose Their Eyes Were Watching God for this prompt. I had heard so many great things about it, and I wanted to give it a try. It was a great read.

Read three books by the same author.

Lastly, I read A Northwoods Mystery Series. These books just fell right into my lap at the perfect time. They were fun mysteries to read for Halloween. Plus, I used them to complete this prompt. I will be participating in the blog tour for The Silver Box on November 14th.

So that is what I read to complete the Modern Mrs. Darcy Challenge. As always, I had fun with each prompt. I hope to participate again in 2021. What challenges do you participate in? Let me know in the comments.

If you want to know my full thoughts on a book mention, I have reviews for most of them.

  1. Love Shadow of the Wind and I am currently going down a Zora Neale Hurston rabbit hole. You mentioned that you are couple of hours away from Birmingham. This means we are in the same general geographic region. I’m in Nashville.

  2. Ohh, Fear Street! Great choice! Those books stay awesome. I also found some books (stranger diaries and Northwoods Mystery) that I would like to check out. Congrats on finishing your challenge!
