The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson Review

It’s about time that I read The Haunting of Hill House. It has been on my tbr forever. Keep reading to hear my thoughts.

Four people who have had paranormal experiences arrive at Hill House. Dr. Montague is an occult scholar who wants to prove that Hill House is haunted. Theodora, Eleanor, and Luke help in the research. At first, their stay holds nothing more than creaky doors at night. But as Hill House gains strength it will choose someone as it’s own.

My Thoughts on The Haunting of Hill House

The Haunting of Hill House starts out great. It is spooky and atmospheric. You can feel the tension building. Each character becomes more and more anxious. The house effects one character in particular. It’s interesting watching that descent. It is incredibly foreboding.

Unfortunately, toward the middle of the book I began feeling disconnected. Two ridiculous characters were introduced, and I hated them. They were obnoxious and didn’t seem to serve much of a purpose.

Also, toward the end I kept expecting what was building to come to a head. I was hoping for some really spooky things to happen and I was mildly disappointed. The end was creepy, but was slightly predictable. I guess I just had my hopes set too high for this one. But even though I didn’t get the epic ending that I was hoping for, I can respect the suspense building and atmospheric setting.
