Goal Check In: Reading All of John Steinbeck’s Novels

I discovered John Steinbeck in high school. We read a section of The Grapes of Wrath in my English class a week before my birthday. I was instantly enamored by Steinbeck’s writing. I knew I had to finish it. When my parents asked me what I wanted for my birthday I asked for a copy of The Grapes of Wrath. I devoured that book.

A couple of months later, I found a copy of Travels with Charley in Search of America at a library sale. I loved it even more than I loved The Grapes of Wrath. I went to the local library and checked out several more of his books. I really enjoyed all of them.

On November 7, 2014, I set the goal to read all of John Steinbeck’s published works. Unfortunately, life got in the way. Since setting that goal I have graduated high school, started college, started a job, graduated college, and got married. I think it is time to start working toward this goal again.

Here is where I am at so far. The green text represents the books that I have read.

  • Cup of Gold
  • The Pastures of Heaven
  • The Red Pony
  • To a God Unknown
  • Tortilla Flat
  • In Dubious Battle
  • Of Mice and Men
  • The Long Valley
  • The Grapes of Wrath
  • Forgotten Village
  • Sea of Cortez
  • The Moon is Down
  • Bombs Away
  • Cannery Row
  • The Pearl
  • The Wayward Bus
  • A Russian Journal
  • Burning Bright
  • Log from the Sea of Cortez
  • East of Eden
  • Sweet Thursday
  • The Short Reign of Pippin IV
  • Once There Was a War
  • Winter of Our Discontent
  • Travels with Charley: In Search of America
  • America and Americans
  • Journal of a Novel
  • Viva Zapata
  • The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights
  • Working Days: The Journal of The Grapes of Wrath
  • The Harvest Gypsies: On the Road to The Grapes of Wrath

Hahaha, so obviously I have a long way to go. I hope to take some time to work toward this goal this year. I think I am going to start with America and Americans or The Pearl.
